Is Survival Selfish?
Do you think survival is selfish? This is the central question of this essay. Survival does require people to be selfish because people can’t count on other people to save them and apathy will kill people faster than anything, so people have to be selfish and care about what happens to them. Many survival stories prove that people have to save themselves.
People can’t count on others because they risk their life. People who waited to be saved during 9-11 died because rescue personnel couldn’t get to them Gonzales writes, “People who were used to following the rules died because they did what they were told by authority figures.” (Gonzales 327). Following rules when there is a bad situation is not the best idea because you could hurt yourself. You have to be selfish to survive because you should put yourself before others. Another example is Julianne. She survived the plane crash because she left the others and saved herself; she had to look after herself instead of waiting for help. The others who waited for help died. Gonzales writes “ Tough and clearheaded... the other survivors took the same eleven days to sit down and die” (Gonzales 326). The teenage girl was selfish because she could have told all the others to get up and just to survive, but she didn’t; she actually put herself before others and survived. This shows that survival is selfish. Not only should people not count on other people to save them, but apathy will kill people faster than anything, so people have to be selfish and care about what happens to them.
People will die faster if they don’t start putting themselves first. When Ronald DiFrancesco was attempting to escape the twin towers on 9-11, he only survived because he didn’t give in to apathy” (Gonzales 332). “The people, all of whom would die, were just giving up and falling asleep. People shouldn’t give up on life because there is so much to live for, and they should have just gotten up and tried to live DiFrancesco had to care about himself to stay alive. Another example is that people who are prepared have died waiting for others to come and save them because they gave in to apathy. “Searchers are always amazed to find people who have died while in possession of everything they needed to survive” (Gonzales 327). This quote it shows that people need to think about themselves when they are about to die. People should just start thinking about themselves because other people can’t make people care. They have to be selfish.
Although it’s clear that survival is selfish, there are those who disagree. Some people argue that people need a reason to survive; this is often thinking of others and the loss they would suffer were they to die. The truth is, you don’t need to survive for someone, you need to survive for yourself. Sometimes, it might be the thought of someone’s family that makes them to survive, but they’re really just thinking of themselves to being able to see those people again. DiFrancesco saw people dying, He could have told them something to help them, but he didn’t. He left them there, and now they are probably dead. Ultimately, the evidence is overwhelming that survival is selfish.
People do have to be selfish because people can’t count on other people to save them, and apathy will kill people faster than anything, so people have to be selfish and care about what happens to them. I think people can’t count on other people to save them. They should at least try and save Themselves. Apathy will kill people faster than anything, so people have to be selfish and care about what happens to them. If they don’t start caring for themselves, they will die. So, is survival selfish? Yes, it is selfish.
